Meet Jonah

Jonah is a young green iguana who is staying with me for a few days. I'm trying to locate a permanent home for him soon. He is a very calm little iggie that is willing to sit on your hand, arm, or shoulder as long as you will allow him to. If I could afford a large enough cage for him as an adult, I'd keep him myself.

A Girl

Jabez came through her first molt just fine. And yes, I did say "her". Turns out Jabez is a girl! Once I had the exoskelton to examine (see photo below) I could finally sex this creature. She took her first meal today since the molt and is moving around great.

My Wild Children

My new little sugar gliders are pretty wild and incredibly fast once they wake up. I'm amazed at how adept they are at climbing. They can scale anything in sight, hang upside down like a bat, or swing on one arm like a monkey. They usually start stirring a bit around 9:00 PM but don’t actually come out for activity until around 11:00 PM.

They have been great little eaters. No problem at all getting them to take fresh fruits and veggies. They haven't touched the insectivore-fare food that I keep in the cage at all times, but I've continued to offer it. I also started them on their BML diet the second night with me and they really seemed to enjoy that mixture.

I left them alone their first night with me so that they could settle in. The second night I stuck my hand in the cage to try to touch one and got the scare of my life! Have you ever seen the old horror movies with the vampires that wear capes? That is exactly what the incident reminded me of. As I reached in, the little boy (Noah) reared up on two legs with his arms outstretched, bared his teeth, let out a blood-curdling noise, and lunged at me to bite me. It startled me so bad I actually fell back to the floor. LOL Monday night I was able to place my hands in the cage without any major attacks, but as they would come to explore my hand they kept biting. I'm told that at this young age gliders tend to be nippy. Then last night I was trying to get one of the little girls to come to me when from out of nowhere the little boy came flying out of the cage. I rushed to close the door and get my dogs out of the room. He was everywhere! Scaling walls and in and out of my computer desk shelves. Luckily he came zooming back toward the cage and went right inside so that I was able to close the door on him. So I’ve had a wild time already with these new additions.

Suggies Have Arrived

I picked up my new sugar glider joeys yesterday morning. For the first few hours I kept them in a bonding pouch around my neck. When I first placed them in their cage last night the little boy (Noah) and one of the girls (Jalynn) didn't hesitate to start exploring. I became a bit concerned after an hour or so when the other little girl (Analynn) didn't come out of her pouch. So I lifted her out just to make sure she was OK. Analynn climbed on my hand and didn't want to get off ... so cute. By 11:00 PM all three of them were climbing and jumping all over the cage. I'm amazed at how quickly they can move and how adept they are to climbing even at this young age. They all ate every bite of the mixed fruit and veggies I gave them.

Despite all the really cool soft looking pouches I've placed inside their cage, this morning I found them curled up sleeping inside their wheel. Guess they wore themselves out with all their playing.

My nephew, Billy, and my sister, Tracey, helped me mix up the BML diet recipe that I plan on starting the joeys on this week. It was really easy to make and should last for several weeks.

Jabez is Molting!

When I went to check up on Jabez just a few minutes ago, I was thrilled by what I saw. He is busting out of his skin; molting. Right now he looks like a jumbled mess of bloody legs. I misted the far corner of his tank to increase the humidity to help him with this process.

Tarantula Concern

As I was cleaning some cages this afternoon and doing checks on all my gang, I became quite concerned at what I saw inside my Tarantula terrarium. Jabez was laying on his back with his feet kind of extended straight out. At first I thought he was dead. In my research with tarantulas though I've heard that this can be a normal position for molting and that often people believe they are dead when this happens. Upon lightly touching him I could tell he was still alive. I've decided to leave him alone for the moment and just keep doing checks.

Chinchilla Mayhem

My chinchillas found a new way to get into trouble today while out playing. Somehow tonight they managed to open up a closed closet door. When I went in and caught them, Faith was nowhere to be seen. I knew she had to be inside the closet somewhere so I began to look cautiously. I didn't want to step on her or move something that might fall on her. Then I spotted her sitting inside a scoop snow shovel. LOL

New Photos

Got several new photos of my little gliders today. I have decided to take the brother at the same time I pick up the twin girls. A date has been set for Sunday, June 19 for my pick up. Pictured below is one of the little girls curled up to sleep in a pant leg.

Miracle

I know this isn't the best picture, but Miracle is just so cute when she is curled up sleeping in her corner. She has outgrown her plastic bed so she now gathers up bedding to create her own sleeping area.

Miracle was given her name because I didn't think she was going to live after I got her. She was very sick with wet tail; dehydrated, refused to eat or drink, etc. She was taken to the animal hospital for fluids and an antibiotic. She then spent the first month of her life with me being force fed and medicated by hand.

It's Finished

Finally after days and days of hard work, I've finished building my sugar glider cage. This week I'll complete the accesories. At the moment I have branches in the top level, two wooden ladder bridges, two coconut houses, and a Wodent Wheel.

Still At It

I was able to locate some J-Ring pliers and rings used to put together rabbit cages. I tried using these to finish up my sugar glider cage, but it didn't work. I did end up using some plastic cable ties to finish up the bottom panel. So all I really need to do is secure the shelves and attempt to add some ramps to finish up. Of course this is easier said than done.

I contacted K&D Exotics about my plier problem a couple of days ago to see if they would sell me a pair or at least tell me where I might find a pair. They still haven't responded back to the message I left. Yet another example of why I'd never deal with this company again.
