Vet Trips Continue

Since I had a day off work today, I made a follow-up appointment at the vet for my baby guinea pig, Storm. Her respiratory infection has started clearing up but she is still doing some sneezing. The vet decided to try a prescription of Albon with her to hopefully wipe this infection out completely.

On a more discouraging note for the week, I awoke on Wednesday to find one of my hedgehog cages covered in about 50-100 quills. I woke Casper up to see all of these bald spots across his back with very dry flaky red skin exposed. After cleaning up the cage, I gave him an oatmeal bath. The bath caused his skin to lighten in color to a dull pink. The bath was kind of a scary situation though because more quills just kept falling off. The next day more quills were in the cage so I put some Vitamin E oil on his skin and added a warm moist humidifier to the room. Today the vet did a skin scrape and discovered the culprit - MITES!! Yikes! I'm going to try a treatment of Revolution and continue with the oatmeal baths. As a precaution all of my other hedgehogs are also getting a bath and a treatment today. I've also decided to remove the Carefresh bedding and use just cage liners for at least a month so things will be easier to clean daily.
