Can someone please give me more info about long range phones?

I heard about these long range phones that you can hook up to your own phone line. However, they work like cell phones and have a range of several miles. I found these online:

These phones are actually unlicenced high power radio transceivers. These are illegal in most industrialized countries. As you can see, the website you gave even discontinued these phones probably under pressure from Industry Canada as they violate regulations for unlicenced devices. The base operates like a business band VHF or UHF radio and to get the figures they claim it would have to be hooked up to a gain antenna outdoors on a mast or a tower. They use frequencies that are used by licenced services like business band, public safety, aircraft and ham radio frequencies. They are made in China and exported to other countries where they interfere with the police and other licenced users. PLEASE do not support them by buying one on eBay. You can be fined and in some cases imprisoned by using them. As a licenced user of some of the frequencies these things tend to use, they are a pain in the rear and I have to track them down and forward the info to the authorities.

The best range LEGAL cordless phones are DECT 6.0. They are all digital phones by definition, have the highest allowed power output and don't interfere with other users which is inherent in the specification for DECT 6.0. I recommend any Panasonic DECT 6.0 model like the KX-TG1032 which I have personally. It will go about a half mile under optimal conditions (line of sight) and that's good enough for me.

EDIT: Just wanted to clear up some of the inaccuracies of the other answerer. While Telephone Magic, a Canadian company has discontinued the long range cordless phone, they are still made today in Asia and still pose a threat to licenced spectrum users. It doesn't take much searching to find overseas retailers still selling these phones.

Also, the FCC limit for all cordless phones is NOT the same. I would challenge the other answerer to cite his sources. Part 15 of the FCC rules covers unlicenced devices. Subpart D covers DECT phones, more specifically Part 15.323 and 15.319. The limit for DECT frequencies is 100 microwatts times the square root of the emission bandwidth in Hz. A DECT phone has a bandwidth of 1152 kbps. Add 10% overhead and you get 1.2672 MHz of bandwidth consumed. Put this into the above calculation and you get about 112 or 113mW. This is output power. You are allowed 3dB over isotropic in antenna gain on top of this which is double the input power as effective radiated power. Same as transmitting 224mW into an isotropic antenna.

Calculations for other cordless phone frequencies are different. They're based on field strength. FCC rules Part 15.233 cover the old 46/49MHz phones with a limit of 10,000microvolts per meter as measured at a 3 meter distance from the antenna. Want to take a guess how many watts into an isotropic antenna it would take to give a field strength of 10,000 microvolts per meter at 3 meters away? 30 MICROwatts! .03mW versus 112mW. Granted, 46/49MHz propagates in the open better than 1.9GHz but look at the field strength differences here. There's no comparison in the near or mid field.

FCC Part 15.249 states that 900MHz, 2.4GHz and 5.8GHz unlicenced transmitters (read 900MHz, 2.4GHz and 5.8GHz analog phones) are allowed 50,000μV/m @ 3m. A bit better, this equates to .75mW into isotropic.

Now you may have noticed I specifically said ANALOG. That's because Digital Spread Spectrum phones are covered under 15.247. I know what you're going to say. Look! 1 WATT limit! Okay but read the requirements. Spread spectrum means this power is spread over a decent sized chunk of spectrum. In other words, a 1 watt narrow band FM signal is going to go a whole lot further than a 25 MHz wide signal. You focus that energy down to 2.5MHz and there's your 100mW and since DECT is less than half that wide, you've got more effective use of power. Combine this with the fact that you're not going to find many 1 watt transmitters next to people's heads for a couple of reasons. 1, transmitting 1 watt isn't kind on battery life and 2, 1 watt at 5.8GHz next inches from someone's brain kind of exceeds the maximum allowable RF exposure limits.

All that being said, I do agree there are many real world factors to consider which attenuate signals. Even out in the open, free space loss is going to be different based on frequency, then you have atmospheric absorption and atmospheric noise (greater at lower frequencies) plus interference, etc. etc. If all things are equal in an environment I think you will find a good quality DECT phone will beat out an equivalent quality any other band phone. The DECT frequencies aren't shared by anything other than other DECT devices. 900, 2.4 and 5.8 are all very commonly used ISM bands. Some fancier digital phones will try and prevent interference with other users but all it takes is someone's $5 analog phone from WalMart to fire up on those bands to destroy it. DECT has more power per MHz in general than any other cordless. The 1.9GHz band is a happy medium. 5.8GHz is getting too high for near field and especially mid field propagation. 900MHz and 46/49MHz especially do not penetrate floors or rooms as well. I've tried phones side by side as well and my DECT phone wins every time.
