Hi, this is RJ Ritchie, Author of How To Write Your Rock Solid Resume. Today we are going to answer these 4 questions:
1. What are some Online Job Hunting Tools?
2. What are Keywords and 5-10 second scans?
3. Other Resume Tips should I consider while looking for your job?
4. What are some other ways to find a job?
What are some Online Job Hunting Tools?
I highly recommend Indeed. com, which takes hundreds of job postings and put them into one tool. You can search by location, job, salary, company, and more. You can also post your desire to look for a job. This is a great site and I have used it many times. If you do not know this site you can go to Indeed. com.
What are Keywords and 5-10 second scans?
Keywords are words that are found on the job description or company website. Put their keywords on your resume so it fits what the employer is look for. Let's say they are looking for a dedicated team player who has technical experience. Then in your cover letter and/or resume, you need to input that you have technical experience and you were able to help your team out with this knowledge, which was extremely appreciated. When an employer or recruiter reads your resume they will spend about 5-10 seconds scanning your resume to see if your resume has any keywords on it that match what they are looking for. There is also a computer program called OCR software that will scan your resume and put those resumes that have keywords in one pile and those that don't in a special pile. What other Resume Tips should I consider while looking for your job?
Here are some tips you might consider when Writing a Resume.
During your resume writing and job-hunting season, consider getting your own PO Box, 888 or 800 number, and personalized email. Why? This keeps your work related items separate from your personal life. It's not that your trying to hide anything it's just that you don't need to broadcast your personal life to everyone. Another reason that so your personal mail and phone calls get to you personally and your work related business. Your voice answering message would be more professional and you know when that phone rings it is from an employer. You can get a PO Box at the post office for cheep, a phone number for ten bucks a months from my1voice (dot) com and a personalized email from go daddy or yahoo for about 7 bucks a year. (tim@timsmith (dot) com, for example) Also, try to keep all your personal info private like your MySpace, Facebook, twitter, etc. as future employers can and will look you up and this can keep you from getting a job. Do your own search by typing your name in Google search. Then type it again but put your first and last name together. Next, repeat the last two steps and add "quotes". I think you may be amazed at how much info is available on line. Employers also pay to have companies search for everything about you if they think you are a likely candidate.
What are some other ways to find a job?
I recommend Networking at your locals clubs, churches, via meetup.com. You might consider signing up for those free business cards online and put your name, phone, and email and maybe your specialty on it with the back blank so you can write one it. Now at the network meetings as you get to know people and they ask you what you do for a living you can tell them you are currently seeking employment in your field. Ask if they would happen to know anyone in the field, they could refer and if they do ask if you can give them your card to pass along. You can hand your cards to them but on the back put down where you met and what type of work you are looking for. Hand your card to this person you meet and thank them for consideration of passing your card to there associates.
